Back in the 80's and 90s there were quite a few Hot Rods and Kustoms set up to run soley on LPG, now 30 years on and here in Melbourne Victoria we have service stations pulling out LPG tanks all together bcause it's cheaper to pull them out than it is to re-certify the tanks. What a messed up world we live in at the moment, LPG is a clean fuel, it has 1/10th of the carbon of crude oil based petroleum fuels, we have plenty of it here in Australia, yet no government supports it and it's use is dying off quickly. LPG support and conversion businesses have closed up a while back and some of my customers have to travel 5 to 10km now just to fill the LPG tank. I have a workable solution.
Convert your Hot Rod back to petrol, I can use the existing LPG tank as it sits, convert it so you can fill it with petrol and feed out to newly run fuel lines, then install a tank breather with a roll over valve, fit a fuel pump and a carburettor. The most simple of these jobs is the typicall pickup truck where the tank is in the bed and easy to get to a filler neck welded to the tank its self. Other intallations would have to be assesed for a gravity feed filler neck. Typically a job like this could cost from around $5,500 to $12,500. It depends on what parts your car needs, how much painting is involved, how much disassmbly and reassembly is required, and it's level of difficulty. I can provide a turn key solution where you drive in in and you drive it out all done, or I can do the bits you are not confident enough to do and you sort out the rest.
The LPG tanks usually need to be cleaned out, derusted inside, converted, then lined with an epoxy coating and repainted outside. Generally the fuel sender can interface with an eisting fuel gauge or install a more appropriate guage. There are different senders available with different Ohms ratings to match up with some original fuel guages, although sometimes we may have to wait for the correct rated part to come from overseas. This sort of conversion works well where it is an issue to change the tank out, or you already have a big tank in the car so why not use it. If you have duel fuel pickup and no longer running on LPG then I could convert the LPG tank to be a second fuel tank.
A cheaper way is to just use one of the many after market tanks that are mass produed to be the cheapest tank. However they will never be as strong as this tank you already have, their capacity may be a lot smaller and they typically need re-mounting or new mounts made to fit them, so there will be some messing about.
You would need to run the LPG tank dry and let it vent to atmoshere for a month before I would work on it.
Anyway it is a solution I have performed successfully on the pick up in these pics, so something to think about.
